Bone Response on Surface Characteristics after Implantation of Osseointegrated Dental Implants in Adult Dogs
¾ÈÁß±Ô ÃÖ¸ñ±Õ
Abstract
The authors observed the bone responses to the osseointegrated implants with different surface characteristics such as, Bonefit(r)(titanium plasma spray(TPS) -coated hollow-screw type), Integral (hydroxylapatite(HA) -coted cylinder type),
Steri-Oss(r)(HA-coated screw type), and Steri-Oss(r)(uncoated smooth surfaced screw type) in the mandible of dogs.
In 3 adult dogs(20-25 kg B.W.), the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th mandibular premolar teeth were removed bilaterally. Four months later, 4 kinds of implants were placed in the edentulous sites. The dogs were sacrificed on 4, 8, and 12 week and radiographs
were
taken, followed by tissue block sectioning. These block sections were fixed in 70% alcohol for 3 days, followed by suspension in Villaneuva staining solution for 3 days. The block sections were then embedded with polymethylmethacrylate. We
evaluated the
bone reactions on undecalcified ground specimens under light microscope.
@ES The obtained results were as follows :
@EN 1. After 4 and 8 weeks, TPS or HA-coated implants had less fibrous tissue contact and more bone formation than uncoated implants. HA-coated implants were most favorable in the degree of osseointegration.
2. Bone tissues were substituted for osseous fibrous connective tissue adjacent to the surface of the implants and the implants were surrounded with compact lamellar bone after 12 weeks.
3. Bone contact with the surface of the implants was more intimate and bone remodelling was faster in the cortical bone than in the medullary bone.
4. Bone ingrowth into the porous surfaced implants was faster than the smooth surfaced implants.
5. Radiographically, there were no significant differences between implants in bone formation around the implants after 8 weeks. However, bone growth over the implants was observed in HA-coated implants after 12 weeks.
The results from this study demonstrate that the hydroxylapatite coating provides an osteophilic surface for bone deposition and the porous surface allows more rapid bone ingrowth, but there are no significant differences depending on surface
characteristics with time over a 12 week period.
